There is whats called a second level domain - domain.com 

subdomains - are attached as prefixes to the second level domain such as blog.domain.com

A domain that is registered - a registered domain is second and top level such as domain.com.

You register the domain at a domain register - a company that registers domain names for individual web users.

A DNS which you may have heard of the the internet system in which the domain names are translated into IP addresses.

An IP address is a number representing the “address” of a computer or network.
